Friends pays last respects to Tanner

NAHUNTA — The Brantley County community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Talan Tanner.

Tanner succumbed to injuries Wednesday, July 31 suffered when he fell from a vehicle and was run over Sunday, July 28. His body was brought back to Frye Funeral Home Friday, August 2.

Tanner was life-flighted to UF Health in Jacksonville, Fla., following the early night accident on Paloma Street in northern Nahunta and placed on life support.

He was riding in a 2014 Ford LGT truck driven by a 16-year-old juvenile. According to the official report of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Justin Jones, Tanner, a passenger, was in the front seat and unrestrained when he moved to a sitting position in the window area of the passenger side.

The 17-year-old fell from the window and was The Georgia Department of Education states on its website, “All drivers are required to stop when meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended when loading or unloading passengers. The only exception to this rule is when highways are separated in the center by a dirt, grass or concrete median. In this situation, only vehicles following or traveling alongside a school bus in the same direction must stop.”

The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, reminds drivers, “yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.

“Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving, before you start driving again.”

GOE recommends drivers wait until unloaded passengers have cleared 12 feet off the roadway before driver’s move.

In her untimely death, Adalynn Pierce saved eight lives through organ donation and helped 75 lives through tissue donation.
