PCMS Bears split with Bethune, Wayne Middle

Pierce County Middle School’s Bears 8th-grade basketball team split a pair of home games in the first two weeks of the season.

The Bears lost a 32-31 heartbreaker Monday, November 4 to visiting Bethune Middle School. They slipped past Wayne County Middle School 3633 Wednesday, November 13.

No reports were filed on South Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference games vs. Brantley County Middle School, Ware County Middle School and Long County Middle School.

The Bears hosted Waycross Middle Monday (November 18), traveled to Frederica Academy Tuesday (November 19) and to Ware Middle Thursday, November 21 to wrap up the pre-Thanksgiving schedule.

Bethune ................32 Bears.....................31 BEARVILLE — A poor free throwing shooting performance doomed Pierce Middle in the loss to the Braves.

PCMS converted just 5of-19 attempts from the line including an 0-for-8 first half. Bethune Middle was just 3-of-7.

Damon Moody scored 13 of his game-high 17 points over the final two periods to lead the Bears. Will Higginson was next with eight points. Maverick Pitts netted four points with Dawson Brody chipping in four points.

The Braves grabbed a 12-4 lead through the opening period. They tacked on one point to the advantage outpointing Pierce Middle 5-4 in the second stanza for a 17-8 halftime lead.

Each team scored 10 points in the third quarter with Bethune Middle taking a 27-18 lead into the final period. PCMS made things interesting outscoring the Braves 13-5 down the stretch.

Bears ....................36 Wayne Middle.......33 BEARVILLE — Pierce Middle built a 10-point first quarter advantage and held on to slip past Wayne County Middle.

Moody scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead the Bears. Miles Pitts was next with five points. Greyson Raulerson, Jayme Perez and Higginson followed with three points apiece — all on three-point baskets.

PCMS built a 13-3 lead by the end of the first period. The Yellow Jackets chipped two points off the deficit in the second quarter outscoring Pierce Middle 119 to trail 22-14 at intermission.

Wayne Middle outscored the Bears 6-4 in the third stanza closing the deficit to 26-20. The visitors used a 13-10 scoring advantage in the final quarter to get to within three.

A.J. Bennett paced the Yellow Jackets with 13 points. Sam Pye chipped in 10 points.
