ATV vs. vehicle leads to one seriously hurt

A Washington state man was seriously injured in an accident on Ware Street last Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Rocky Mendoza, 31, of Othello, WA, was flown by AirEvac helicopter to UF Health in Jacksonville, FL, following the 2:53 p.m. accident.

The helicopter landed at the Pierce County Recreation Department near the accident scene to transport Mendoza to the hospital.

Mendoza was a passenger on a 2021 Honda Rancher four-wheeler being driven east on Ware Street by his sister, Nedelia Mendoza, 33, also of Othello, WA.

The four wheeler is owned by Rolando Luna of Blackshear.

N. Mendoza said she was approaching Sunny Meadows Drive and “was not really paying attention” when the four-wheeler was hit and her brother was ejected.

The four wheeler was struck by a 2005 Honda Odyssey driven by April Bowen of Blackshear.

Bowen was also headed east on Ware Street behind the four wheeler. She said she had activated her turn signal and was attempting to pass when the four wheeler turned into her path and struck her vehicle.

Officer Breanna Winters of the Blackshear Police Department investigated the accident.
