Steedley
Jimmie Sue “Marmee” Tyre Steedley, 87, of Blackshear, passed away Thursday evening, September 26, 2024, at the Baptist Village Nursing Home.
Born in Alma November 17, 1936, she lived most of her adult life in Pierce County. She was a 1954 graduate of Bacon County High School where she was a cheerleader, president of Tri-Hi-Y and was crowned Miss Bacon County High School her senior year. She would go on to attend Bessie Tift College for Women on a music scholarship. Her high school sweetheart, Curtis Neal Steedley Sr., could not stand to be away from her so they decided to go ahead and get married. Following their marriage, they lived in Screven briefly before moving to Mershon where over the next few years they would become the parents of three children. She was a homemaker and the best mama to her children. Following the sudden passing of her husband at the age of 44, she knew she had to keep going for her children and therefore managed to continue to raise them on her own. She was and will always be the 'Queen of her family's hearts' for all of the love she constantly showered upon them.
She worked in the office at the Carter Tobacco Warehouse in Alma, was a beloved substitute teacher at Patterson Elementary, and co-owned The Plantation - Wedding and Formal Wear in Blackshear. She eventually went to work for Inez Raulerson at The Dakki Shop. Following Mrs. Raulerson's retirement, she and another co-worker from The Dakki Shop, Margie Sapp, opened The Sassy Fox clothing store. They would eventually move their location to Waycross where they would eventually close it so they could enjoy retirement.
Singing and playing the piano were her most passionate hobbies. She and her sister, Ann, sang at numerous weddings and funerals over the years. She also enjoyed walking in her younger days and was an avid reader often reading several books within a week. She was known for her cooking and would still have people call her for some of her recipes. She was a member of the Blackshear First Baptist Church where she had been a co-teacher of the ladies Sunday School class.
She was a daughter of the late Delmas Marion “D.M.” Sr. and Minta Medders Tyre. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Neal Steedley Sr., her daughter, Dinah Miles; her sister, Ann Tyre Williams; both of her brothers, Delmas M. Tyre Jr. and Eddie Wendell “Winkie” Tyre; twin grandsons, Walt and Whit Hollis; a niece, Dana Williams; a former sister-in-law, Martha Jon Weatherly and her dear friend, Irene Dixon.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jerry Hollis, Waycross; her son and daughter-in-law, Curtis N. “Curt” Jr. and Linda Steedley, Blackshear; a son-in- law, Monroe Miles, Blackshear; two brothers-in-law, Earl Williams, Alma and Van (Ruth) Steedley, Mershon; her former sisterin- law, Joan Griffith, Gainesville; seven grandchildren, Amber Miles, Dr. Kyle (Hannah) Hollis, Landon (Marah) Miles, Dr. Neal (Megan) Hollis, Victor Steedley, Sergey Steedley (Tiffany Boyette) and Yuri Steedley; three great-grandchildren, Watson Hollis, Bowen Steedley and Anna Hampton Hollis and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, from the Pearson-Dial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bill Young and the Rev. R. C. James officiating.
Interment followed in the Bristol Cemetery.
