Letter to the Editor

In the face of unimaginable adversity, I witnessed a remarkable transformation

Editor, The Times: The devastating impact of Hurricane Helene has left a mark on Southeast Georgia—a moment in time we will never forget. With her unyielding winds and relentless floods, she stripped away power, water, resources and homes, leaving many of our neighbors in despair. As the hours turned into days, anxiety crept into our hearts. Yet, as the sun broke through the clouds over Waycross and Pierce County, I was profoundly moved by the spirit of our community— a spirit that refused to be defeated.

In the face of such unimaginable adversity, I witnessed a remarkable transformation. Those who once called Waycross home, even from afar, donned the armor of community and returned to lend a hand. They filled gas canisters, loaded up their trucks and distributed essential supplies to those who had lost everything. Others stepped up to provide food, while our local churches came together, embodying the true essence of service as they followed the example of compassion that Jesus taught us.

This incredible response was not the effort of a few, but a collective triumph of citizens, community leaders, pastors, city officials, commissioners and candidates who hope to sit in a chair as commissioners. Many worked tirelessly to uplift one another. I often liken myself to a fish in a fishbowl, a metaphor for leadership that highlights the scrutiny leaders face—often judged for decisions made without insight into the strategic thinking behind them. Leadership can be challenging, but in this time of crisis, we have much to celebrate. Our leaders in Pierce County and Waycross exhibited exceptional guidance, ensuring our safety and helping us meet our essential needs.

Whether through effective communication, hands-on support in the community or selfless acts of volunteering, the dedication of our leaders and citizens alike has been nothing short of inspirational. The collective efforts of all involved will be etched in history—a testament to what can be achieved when we unite in the wake of catastrophe. This movement, forged through resilience and dedication, stands as a shining example of the strength of our community.

We owe a deep debt of gratitude to county manager, Raphael D. Maddox of Pierce County and city manager, Ulysses (Duke) Rayford of Waycross, as well as Waycross Mayor Michael Angelo James and many others. Their unwavering commitment during this crisis has shown us the power of leadership in action. Together, we have proven that even in our darkest hours, the human spirit can rise, united in purpose and compassion. Let us celebrate this extraordinary alliance and continue to support one another, for it is in our unity that we find our greatest strength.

S.M. Lane Waycross
