Ellen McLeod Ratliff Highsmith Adams, former “first lady” of Blackshear and longtime community leader, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 24. She was 99.
Adams was the widow of the late Mayor Harry G. Adams who served as Blackshear’s mayor for a decade.
She was also active in the community as a volunteer for “Meals on Wheels” and was the last surviving member of the Blackshear Supper Club founded in 1960. She was retired from Peoples Bank (now The First Bank).
Adams was a faithful member of the Blackshear First United Methodist Church.
She served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the “singing platoon” entertaining troops in World War II.
Funeral services are pending due to Hurricane Helene and will be announced later by Pearson-Dial Funeral Home.
