In honor of their fifth anniversary, the Okefenokee Alliance for the Homeless, Inc. (OATH) launched a “Fives for Five” campaign, urging givers to donate as many “fives” as they can, whether that is $5, $55, $555, $5,555 or more. Each contribution helps some of the most needy in Brantley, Pierce and Ware Counties.
Created to fill a service gap that existed for homeless families in the tri-county area, OATH grew from a grassroots task force established by the Ware Children’s Initiative, a Georgia Family Connection collaborative, in January 2017. The task force united faith-based organizations that had not formerly worked together, mainstream agencies depending on faith-based help but had never shared ideas or issues, volunteers who were once homeless, and three Southeast Georgia counties in need but had never had shared discussions on poverty, food insecurity, or safe and secure housing.
In 2019, OATH was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt charitable organization and held its first board meeting. Since then, OATH has served 1,522 in need, including 396 children, 959 adults and 167 senior citizens.
