Pierce Middle clinches final playoff berth beating Bacon

Pierce County Middle School ended a four-game Southeast Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference skid beating Bacon County Middle School to secure a conference tournament berth.

Wayne County Middle School extended the Lady Bears losing streak to three games with a 13-3 home victory in five innings Monday, September 16. Visiting Appling County Middle School blanked PCMS 10-0 in five innings Tuesday, September 17 in a makeup game originally scheduled for September 12.

Following the game, Lady Bear 8th graders were recognized and honored. The players were Ella Davis, Ashton Kicklighter, Kabela and Kinsey Reddick, Haley Slusher, Melanie Tomlinson, Malia White and Sophia White.

PCMS closed out the regular season Thursday, September 19 holding off the Lady Red Raiders 9-7.

The Lady Bears traveled Monday to Ludowici to face Long County Middle School in a semifinal pairing. The conference championship is scheduled for Thursday, September 26 at the highest remaining seed.

JESUP — The Lady Yellow Jackets scored at least four runs in each of their three at bats in beating PCMS.

Wayne Middle scored four runs in the first inning, four in the second and five in the third.

Sadie Warren (1+ IP, 5 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) was charged with the first eight runs with Kaylin Sills (1.1 IP, 0 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 2 WP) being charged with the third inning damage. London Sweet retired five of the six batters she faced with one strikeout.

Wayne Middle sent nine players to the plate in the first scoring on a RBI double, a fielder’s choice groundout, a passed ball and a groundout.

The Lady Yellow Jackets would send nine batters to the plate in the second with the first five reaching before the first out was recorded. They plated runs on a run-scoring single, an error, a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch.

Pierce Middle caught two-out lightening in the third. Sweet (1-for-3) reached on a two-out infield hit and scored on Warren’s (1-for-2) double off a 2-0 offering. Cadence Coldren (3-for-3) followed ripping an 0-2 pitch for a run-scoring triple pulling the Lady Bears to within 8-2.

Wayne Middle responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame with a third straight ninebatter inning to extend its margin to 13-2. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored on bases loaded wild pitch, a bases loaded hit batter, a sacrifice fly, a passed ball and a dropped third strike.

PCMS chased home a final run in the top of the fifth. Kinsey Reddick (1for-2) singled with one out, moved to second on a walk to Warren, and scored on Coldren’s triple to left. Warren was tagged out at the plate for the final out.

BEARVILLE — Visting Appling Middle scored all the runs it would need in the first inning in knocking off the Lady Bears.

The Lady Rams struck for five runs in the first inning recording just one hit. PCMS pitchers walked the first four batters forcing home the first run. A wild pitch, run-scoring single, an error and a groundout finished out the scoring.

Appling Middle scored once in the third for a 6-0 advantage getting a oneout double with a two-out wild pitch plating the run.

The Lady Rams added four runs in the fourth. A run-scoring triple followed a leadoff error for a 7-0 lead. The ensuing groundout extended the lead to 8-0. A two-out single was followed by a runscoring double and an error allowing the final run to race home.

ALMA — Pierce Middle scored the first six runs and then held on as the Lady Red Raiders brought the winning run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

A one-out walk to Warren (1-for-3, three stolen bases) and an error on a ball hit by Coldren (three steals) put runners on the corners. PCMS executed a double steal with Warren scoring the first run.

Coldren followed her theft of second with one of third and scored on Haley Morgan’s (1-for-4) infield hit. After Miranda Howard was hit by a pitch, Sweet (2-for-3) dropped a sacrifice bunt. Kabela Reddick’s two-out fly ball was misplayed scoring Morgan for a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Bears doubled their lead to 6-0 with a three-run second inning. Caitlyn Hinnant led off reaching on an error, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.

Sophia White followed with a walk, moved into scoring position on Warren’s infield hit and scored from second when Coldren’s grounder was misplayed. Warren scored on a passed ball for a 6-0 lead.

Bacon Middle scored twice in the bottom of the second and twice in the fourth to close the deficit to 6-4.

PCMS plated the next three runs to stretch the lead to 9-4 with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Howard drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passes ball and over to third when Sweet reached on a sacrifice bunt putting runners on the corners. After Sweet stole second, both runners scored on Kabela Reddick’s groundout for an 8-4 advantage.

Howard reached on a dropped third strike to start the seventh. After Sweet’s sacrifice bunt moving Howard to second, she moved over to third on a passed ball and scored when Kabela Reddick’s fly ball was mishandled.

The Lady Red Raiders made things interesting in the bottom of the inning plating three runs. They had runners at second and third when the final out was recorded.
