Lady Bears beat Tattnall County, fall to top-ranked Appling County

Pierce County split a pair of Region 3 matchups winning on the road and falling at home.

The Lady Bears (9-8 overall, 3-2 region) completed the season sweep Tuesday, September 17 of homestanding Tattnall County posting a 11-0 victory in five innings. PCHS posted a 10-0 victory at home in the August 27 matchup.

Top-ranked and defending state champ Appling County (14-1, 4-0) stretched its winning streak to six games completing the season sweep Thursday, September 19 of PCHS notching a 5-0 victory. The Lady Pirates won the August 29 meeting 13-0.

Pierce County traveled Monday, September 23 to Lyons to face Class A DI fourth-ranked Toombs County. The Lady Bears go to region foe Crisp County Thursday, September 26.

PCHS will face third-ranked region member Cook High Tuesday, October 1 in Adel and host the Lady Hornets Wednesday, October 2. Class A DII ninth-ranked Metter visits Thursday, October 3.

REIDSVILLE — Carley Sloan twirled a two-hit shutout with the Lady Bears breaking open the game with a seven-run fourth inning.

Sloan fanned seven and walked one while needing just 66 pitches.

PCHS scored twice in the first, added single runs in the second and third, and exploded in the fourth in recording the victory.

Della Delaney (1-for-2, four stolen bases) drew a leadoff walk to start the game, stole second and third, and scored on Alyssa Crump’s (2-for-4) one-out grounder. Taylor Tomlinson (1-for-3) reached on a two-out error, stole second and raced to third when the throw to second was misplayed. She scored on Kaylee Figeuroa’s (1-for-3) RBI single for a 2-0 advantage.

Sloan (1-for-2) led off the second with a walk and was removed for courtesy runner Eva Horne, who stole second with one out. After being sacrificed third by Maelee Childers, Horne scored on Delaney’s infield hit for a 3-0 lead.

Crump started the third inning with a leadoff single and was removed for courtesy runner Caren Drew. Figueroa reached on a one-out fielder’s choice scoring from first on a three-base error on a ball hit by Gracie Corbitt for a 4-0 advantage.

PCHS sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth with eight batters reaching (four hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error) and seven scoring.

Lanie Mai (1-for-3) opened the inning with a single followed by Childers being hit with the next offering. Following the first out, Olivia Bennett (2-for-4) singled plating the first run for a 5-0 lead.

Crump’s ensuing single to center scored Delaney. After Crump was replaced by Drew, a passed ball allowed Bennett to score ahead of a Tomlinson walk putting runners on the corners.

Following a stolen base by Tomlinson, Drew raced home on a passed ball. Tomlinson, who moved to third on the play, scored on the ensuing passed ball for a 90 lead.

After Figueroa walked, Sloan laced a two-out, run-scoring double driving home Figueroa. Horne, running for Sloan, moved to third on the third passed ball of the inning and scored the final run on an error on a ball hit by Mai for an 110 advantage.

Sloan wiggled out of one-out, bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth with a strikeout and a comebacker to the mound.

BEARVILLE — Presly Harrison fanned 15 batters while tossing a four-hit shutout for the Lady Pirates.

Appling County gave the University of Georgia commit all the runs she would need with a three-run first inning against Sloan (7 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 K, 4 BB).

The Lady Pirates opened the game with four consecutive singles, the last two each driving home a run. A fielder’s choice grounder plated the third run for a 3-0 lead.

A two-out, run-scoring double plated a run in the second inning extending the margin to 4-0. A leadoff error set up a sixth inning run on a one-out sacrifice fly.

PCHS’s hits off Presley, who fanned the side three times and recorded at least one strikeout in the other four innings, came in the second inning with a leadoff single by Tomlinson (1-for-2), a two-out single in the fourth off the bat of Figueroa (1for-3) and consecutive singles by Bennett (1-for-3) and Crump (1-for-3) to start the sixth.
