Niño resigns for the second time

Santo Niño has resigned — again — as Pierce County’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director/ fire chief.

The Times learned of Niño’s departure Friday, not quite three months after he intially resigned to take a job in Ware County in June.

County Manager Raphel Maddox confirmed Friday Niño has submitted his resignation and will be leaving to take another job outside of Pierce County.

Maddox said the job has been opened for hire. An advertisement for the position is included in this week’s edition of The Times.

Contacted that afternoon, Niño confirmed his resignation, but declined to additional comment.

“I will have more to say in the near future,” he said. “I am leaving on good terms. I just feel like I have done all I can here and I need to move on.”

Niño accepted a position with Ware County in June, only to be reinstated in Pierce County a week later after Ware County withdrew the offer.

Niño has served as Pierce County’s EMA director and fire chief for the past five years.

Prior to coming to Pierce County, he was with the Waycross Fire Department for 10 years attaining the rank of lieutenant. He was also the training coordinator for Ware County fire departments.
