First District U.S. Congressman Buddy Carter (R-St. Simons Island) reported for duty at The Blackshear Times last Wednesday as part of his “Take Buddy to Work” program.
Carter received an overview of the process for gathering news, producing, printing and mailing The Blackshear Times each week.
Times co-owner Rick Head, News Editor Jason Deal and Staff Writer Greg O’Driscoll met with Carter during his visit. Carter was accompanied by one of his field representatives, Blake Stephenson.
Head, Deal and O’Driscoll had a lengthy discussion about postal issues and also about local general topics and needs including the drug epidemic, lack of affordable housing and inflation. The group also discussed Carter’s work in getting funds for a new water tower for the City of Blackshear.
Head also took Carter to the Blackshear Post Office where they met with Blackshear Postmaster Joey McQuaig and discussed ongoing delivery challenges with the mail.
Carter thanked the staff of The Blackshear Times. “I thank them for teaching me about the very important job The Times does,” he said.
Carter also stressed he continues to work on improving delivery times at the United States Postal Service.
“The postal service was once one of the few things the government did right, but that is no longer the case,” Carter said. “I am committed to holding the postal service’s feet to the fire to improve delivery times.”
Carter represents the first Congressional district of Georgia which includes Pierce County.
