Officer Williams lucky to be alive

“God had His hand on everyone involved.”

Blackshear Police Officer Cody Williams credited Divine intervention for saving him and other motorists during an active traffic stop last Monday night.

Williams had made a routine traffic stop while on patrol on U.S. Highway 84 and Bonneyman Road near the Pierce-Ware County line.

An oncoming motorist came barreling by side-swiping Williams patrol car and endangering those involved in the traffic stop.

Only quick thinking — and quick moves — saved all those involved.

Williams said he believes Divine intervention saved him.

“I was able to get out of the way, but only because God told me to look up and see the car coming,” he said.

He is thankful every one involved is o.k. “It could have ended so much worse than it did,” said Williams. “Nothing but God!”

It was later determined the motorist who struck the police cruiser was driving under the influence and did not move over one lane as required by state law.

Blackshear Police Officer Cody Williams credits Divine intervention for keeping him and other motorists safe during a recent traffic stop.

Georgia’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane when possible if an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is parked on the shoulder of the highway. If traffic is too heavy to move over safely, the law requires drivers to slow down below the posted speed limit instead and to be prepared to stop.

Neither of those things happened in Monday’s incident.

Williams encourages motorists to move over if they see blue lights and to drive sober.

“Lives can either be saved or be instantly changed forever because of those two things.”
