Second-ranked Pierce County had its school-record 10-match winning streak end with a loss to Class 6A Richmond Hill.
The Lady Bears (13-2) opened the week Tuesday, August 27 beating visiting Class 4A Wayne County in a bestof- five match 3-0. PCHS won 25-11, 25-13, 25-21 over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
PCHS entered the week battling sickness and injuries with the list growing. Both Alayna Bell and A’Layka Bell are dealing with ACL injuries while Ava Doss and Lucy Morgan are dealing with shin splints. Hannah Fandrich, the team leader in blocking and a top hitter, is dealing with sickness.
Pierce County traveled Thursday, August 29 to Richmond Hill for a three-team match that included Class 6A Tift County.
“We started strong and ended strong with a lot of up and down in the middle,” said head coach Robbie Spires. “Overall, it was a good performance. The girls did a great job of serving to their target keeping Tift out of its system. It was also one of our better defensive nights.”
PCHS bested the Lady Blue Devils 25-16, 23-25, 15-10 for its 10th consecutive victory.
The Lady Bears matched up with host Richmond Hill in the nightcap falling 25-6, 25-14.
“They (Lady Wildcats) are by far the best team we have seen all season,” said Spires. “They are tall, athletic, strong and mobile. We probably were “out-talled” by them 3-4 inches per player. We struggled with returning serve and could not get into an offensive rhythm all night. They were just too strong for us, especially after a long, tough three-set match with Tift.”
Pierce County will travel Thursday (September 5) to Tattnall County to face the Lady Warriors and Wayne County in a three-team match.
The Lady Bears will host a Region 3-AA play date Saturday, September 7 with Appling County, Cook High, Crisp County, Savannah Arts Academy and Tattnall converging in Bearville.
Action will begin at 9 a.m., with the last matches scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
PCHS will square off with the fourth-ranked Lady Pirates at 9 .m. The Lady Bears face Cook at 10:30 a.m., Savannah Arts at 1:30 p.m., Crisp County at 4:30 p.m. and Tattnall County at 6 p.m.
