HAZLEHURST — Pierce County High School’s cross-country program kicked off its 2024 season here Saturday participating in the Peach State Preview hosted by Jeff Davis.
The Bears placed 12th in the 15-team event while the Lady Bears did not field a full team (five runners) carrying only four participants.
Jones County easily won the boys’ event with 32 points placing all five runners inside the Top 10 positions. The Greyhounds were followed by Northside-Warner Robins (82), Veterans (90), Glynn Academy (95), host Jeff Davis (154), Vidalia (173), Warner Robins (177), Coffee (202), Toombs County (266), Berrien (276), Wayne County (317), PCHS (349), Appling County (373), Brantley County (389) and Brunswick (406).
Jones County’s Lady Greyhounds made it a clean sweep scoring 30 points in the 10-team girls’ event. They were followed by host Jeff Davis (48), Glynn Academy (90), Veterans (145), Brunswick (151), Coffee (159), Vidalia (163), Northside-Warner Robins (228), Toombs County (258), Appling County (267), Wayne County (302) and Warner Robins (326).
Nevaeh Grant posted the Lady Bears’ best finish placing 75th with a time of 28:54.20. The winning time was 19:42.30.
Grant was followed by Emma Strickland (80th; 29:29), Mary Emma Moore (91st; 30:39.10) and Ana Llamas-Diaz (95th; 31:22.80).
Brandon Yepes paced the Bears finishing 62nd with a time of 20:04.40 to trail the winning time of 15:44.70.
Trailing Yepes were Dylan Hersey (66th; 20:18.40), Chase Smith (79th; 20:44.40), James Alonso (105th; 21:52.30), Jeb Bradley (115th; 22:37), Breck Benton (121st; 22:53.60), Micah Bryant (130th; 23:35.70), Lucas Sapp (146th; 24:37.90) and Will McIntosh (152nd; 25:31.70).
PCHS will compete Saturday (August 21) at the Kekyll Island Invitational. The boys’ meet will begin at 7:15 a.m., followed by the girls’ event at 7:55 a.m.
