Hurricane Debby drenched Pierce County this week postponing the first day of school and bringing potentially “historic” torrential rains.
Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, FL early Monday as a category 1 hurricane.
Debby had weak ened to a tropical storm and was making a very slow trek across southeast Georgia including Pierce County. The storm is expected to impact the area through the end of the week.
Pierce County Emergency Management Agency Director Santo Niño said Debby will be a “significant rain” event with “record and historical” rainfall possible.
Niño and local emergency officials received regular briefings from the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, FL during the storm.
Rainfall estimates from 10-20 inches are predicted in the area.
Heavy rain and some gusty winds were experienced in Pierce County Monday as The Times was going to press, but so far no damage or injuries have been reported.
School officials made the decision Sunday to postpone the opening day of the 2024-2025 school year. It is the first time in recent memory the opening day of school has been postponed. Schools are tentatively set to re-open today, Wednesday, August 7, weather permitting.
Niño asks the public to be “weather aware” and to stay home and off the roads if possible.
