WPD investigating first murder

The Waycross Police Department is investigating a murder that occurred Thursday afternoon, February 9 in the 2400 block of Spurgeon Street in Waycross, Major Danny Hampton said in a department release.

Officers responded to the address at approximately 1:20 a.m. after receiving a call regarding gunshots in the area, Hampton said.

Officers found 19-year-old Da’Quavin Wimberly injured from a gunshot at a residence. He was transported to Memorial Satilla Health by EMS, and was later pronounced deceased.

It was the first murder in Waycross in 2023.

There was information of a small white or light color vehicle that was in the area at the time of the incident that may have been damaged during the crime, and may have bullet holes in the side of it, Hampton said.

This is an active investigation, and nothing further is available for release at this time, Hampton said.
