Former Georgia quarterback and two-time national champion Stetson Bennett ran afoul of Dallas police and was arrested at 7:10 a.m. ET on Sunday, January 29, and charged with misdemeanor public intoxication, according to police.
Bennett, 25, was charged with public drunkenness.
He had been training for the NFL Draft in nearby Fort Worths. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound quarterback is all over the place when it comes to mock drafts ... with some writers and “experts” having him drafted in the early mid-rounds, to not being picked at all.
Bennett likely would’ve been in Alabama this week for the Senior Bowl, but turned down an invitation to play in the game. He instead reportedly told game officials he wanted to focus on preparing for the NFL Combine.
The University of Georgia has yet to release a statement on Bennett’s arrest.
According to a police news release, officers were dispatched to Old East Dallas after receiving a report about someone loudly banging on doors. When the officers arrived around 6 a.m. local time, they found Bennett, “determined he was intoxicated,” and arrested him.
“The preliminary investigation found when officers arrived, they located the man, Stetson Bennett, 25, and determined he was intoxicated,” said a Dallas Police Department statement. “Bennett was taken into custody, transported to the Dallas City Detention Center and charged with Public Intoxication.”
There are no details about where they found him or how they determined he was intoxicated. Its also not clear whether he was the person banging on the doors.
After Bennett was arrested, he was taken to a city lockup. It was reported Bennett was released shortly before 11 a.m, but no additional information was available about his arrest.
“The release did not say if Bennett was the man reportedly banging on doors, and it did not say where, specifically, they located him,” reported Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.
Bennett led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive national title earlier this month when they crushed TCU 65-7 in the CFP national championship game. Bennett, a senior, was also a finalist for the 2022 Heisman Trophy, and could be selected in the NFL Draft in April.
He wrapped up his collegiate career with two national titles. He also had 8,428 passing yards and 66 touchdown passes in his collegiate career.
Bennett is considered a potential selection in April’s NFL draft who could go as high as the third round, according to ESPN Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. He recently won the Manning Award, which is given to the top quarterback in the FBS by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
