Miracle League's field ready for action

The Miracle League of the Okefenokee and Ware County will begin the 2023 Spring season on its new “Field of Dreams” at the Trembling Earth Recreation Complex.

Grand Opening for the league is scheduled for Saturday, March 18 featuring several exhibition games.

Construction on the new artificial surface field began September 14, 2022 according to the Miracle League of the Okefenokee’s Facebook page. The project was completed by January 16 by Sports Truf Company, Inc., located in Whitesburg, Ga.

Berry Tanner, President of the Okefenokee League, opened the ribbon cutting ceremony, Friday, January 27 by thanking the community for its support.

“Wow! What a turnout, what a field,” Tanner said. “This is awesome! Thank you all very much!

“We want to thank the Lord for all that He has done to make this happen... I want to also thank the Ware County Board of Commissioners and the Ware County Recreation Department for partnering with us to make this 20-year dream a reality. Thank you Ware County.”

Tanner also thanked all of the volunteers who made it possible, from the dancers to the bull riders, donors, coaches, cheerleaders, pitchers, catchers, the mascot Homer, and the announcers.

“Thank you to each individual, family, church, business, special event leader and participator,” said Tanner.

The $425,000 to make the specially designed field possible came from many of the surrounding counties, including Ware, Pierce, Brantley, Charlton, Clinch, and Bacon Counties.

“Together you all made what we call baseball with a smile, a reality,” Tanner said.

Ware County Commissioner Steve Barnard followed Tanner by saying these kids deserve the same facilities and support as the high schoolers.

The league’s spring baseball and cheerleading registration is currently open with the deadline Friday, February 17. For more information on registration, contact Jimmie Rae Roberts at (912) 670-4677 or email [email protected].

The Miracle League of the Okefenokee also is accepting team sponsors for the spring season. Those interested can contact Tanner at (912) 281-8696 or message the Miracle League of the Okefenokee Facebook page.
