Charlie Pharoh ‘Faro’ Bennett

WAYCROSS — Mr. Charlie Pharoh “Faro” Bennett, 91, died Sunday evening, January 8, 2023, at Hospice House Satilla in Waycross from an extended illness.

He was born September 27, 1931, in Millwood to the late George and Mary Herrin Bennett. Charlie graduated from Waresboro High School, and he joined the United States Air Force in 1950 at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1954 at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.

Following his military service, he received his Bachelor’s Degree from South Georgia College and his Master’s Degree in education from Georgia Southern University. He played basketball for two years at South Georgia College.

Charlie retired after 32 years as a Health and Physical Education teacher, and basketball and track coach at Clinch County High School in Homerville, Hilliard High School in Hilliard, Fla., and Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, Fla.

Charlie also was elected as “Coach of the Year” in Georgia and Florida, and he was inducted into the Clinch County Sports Hall of Fame.

Charlie always enjoyed traveling to other countries especially places like Vancouver, England, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Canada. He also enjoyed fishing, basketball, listening to gospel and classical music, reading romance novels, and playing with his beloved pets.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Marion Henderson, James Robert Bennett, Jimmy Johns, Felton Johns and Mary Jean Johns; and his best friend for many years, Vito Spinelli.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday, January 11) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
