Lady Gators - Basketball

Tenth-ranked Ware County split a pair of Region 1-AAAAA home games over the weekend beating Coffee and falling to Greenbrier with the loss the second in three games.

The Lady Gators (16-6 overall, 6-3 region), who are ranked 10th by both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and MaxPreps, completed a second straight season sweep of the MaxPreps No. 31 Lady Trojans (8-14, 2-8) doubling up the visitors 44-22 Friday, January 27. The loss was the eighth in 10 games for Coffee.

Ware County has captured 10 of the last 13 matchups dating back to the 2015-16 season.

The No. 13 Lady Wolfpack (16-7, 5-3), winners in three of their last four games, closed to within a half-game of WCHS in the region standings after a 48-31 victory Saturday, January 28 for a split in the season series. Ware County notched a 60-52 road win back on January 10.

The Lady Gators will host Statesboro in the regular season finale Friday, February 3.

Ware County raced out to a double-digit lead in the opening eight minutes and never looked back in knocking off the Lady Trojans.

The Lady Gators used a balanced scoring attack with 10 of the 13 players dressed entering the scoring column with nobody reaching double figures.

Ware County opened up an 18-4 lead by the end of the first period. A 9-4 scoring advantage in the second stanza pushed the margin to 27-8 at intermission.

The Lady Gators extended the lead by three points by the end of the third quarter outpointing Coffee 11-8 for a commanding 38-16 advantage. Each team scored six points in the final period.

Rhi Mateyka (two treys) led Ware County with eight points as the bench outscored the starters 25-19. Alexis McNeal (two treys), Trinity Jenkins and CoCo Moody (two treys) all finished with six points.

Charlese McClendon and Anison Delk contributed four points apiece. Kyla McKelvin, Charlacia Jones and JaMiracle McMillan (trey) each scored three points. Lydia Munford netted a free throw.

Coffee, which got 19 points from its starting five, was led by Makaylee Carmichael’s seven points.

Greenbrier 48

Greenbrier connected on six shots from behind the arc and outscored the Lady Gators in three of the four quarters en route to the win.

The Lady Wolfpack were led by Trinity Barrow’s game-high 19 points and five treys. Zuir Goldsberry (trey) followed with 13 points.

McClendon was the lone double-figure scorer for Ware County finishing with 13 points.

Greenbrier claimed a 13-9 lead after eight minutes. The visitors outpointed the Lady Gators 15-6 in the second period to open up a 28-15 halftime margin.

Ware County chipped one point off the deficit in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Wolfpack 11-10 to get to within 38-26. Greenbrier doubled up the Lady Gators 10-5 in the final period.

Jones and Moody followed McClendon’s lead with seven points and six points respectively. Munford netted three points and Jenkins added two points.
