Staff Report A Sunday night fire at Arby’s of Waycross is under investigation, said Waycross Fire Department Chief David Eddins. Crews were dispatched at 7:46 p.m. April 16 to the 2469 restaurant’s location on Memorial Drive. Chief Eddins said crews found fire in the front wall and it had extended into the attic and roof area. They were able to contain the fire to that area. There were no injuries reported, he said. Rhonda Herrin, a Waycross resident, said she was in the drive-thru line with her daughter when the power went out. Herrin wasn’t sure if the power had actually gone out or if they (employees) had closed and turned everything off at that moment with no knowledge of what was happening inside. “We were in line to get our food,” Mrs. Herrin recalled Monday morning. “As we were waiting at the window, you could tell the power had went out. The young man who was working the window said that there was a fire in the wall in the lobby area. “At that point you could smell that it was electrical, there was no smoke, but you could smell it.” The witness said everyone else had left except the young man working the drive-thru window. “I asked him why he was still in the building and he said he needed to serve his customers,” said Mrs. Herrin. After leaving Arby’s, she went across Memorial Drive to Little Caesars to get her children some food. When they looked back across the street within minutes, smoke was coming from the roof. Eddins said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The estimated damage is $20,000. Acting Battalion Chief Thomas Haddock was in charge of the responding fire units.
