Rodney Music says he always dreamed of owning a funeral home someday. That dream became a reality April 23, 1993 when he purchased Mincy-Fulford Funeral Home from a company called Service Corporation International located in Houston, Texas renaming it Music Funeral Home. Since purchasing the funeral home, it has been completely renovated and the building has been enlarged to fit the needs of the families it serves. In September of 2002, Music Funeral Home completed the construction of its on-site crematory known as Satilla Crematory. The crematory is also equipped with a viewing room which allows families to view the cremation process. While Music celebrates his 30th year as owner of the funeral home this month (April 23), he also celebrates 52 years in the industry in May. Music attended Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta and graduated with his degree in March of 1974. The funeral home owner says this life was introduced to him by his uncle. “I started in the funeral industry in May of 1971,” he recalled. “My dad’s brother had a funeral home and I used to go there and hang around with them. I decided I’d do it, too.” Music, a life-long resident of Ware County, is married to the former Chris King of Waresboro. They have two sons, Bradley and Brock, who are involved in the business daily. Chris is also involved in the family business. The two sons have been working in the business since they were teenagers. Both started working at the funeral home when they turned 15. Bradley, Rodney’s oldest son, recalled they began working in the family business by working visitations during the evenings after school and on the weekends. The elder Music says working with his two sons on a daily basis over the years has helped keep the wheels going for the 30-year old business. “It’s good that they’re here,” he said. “If I do take some time off, I know things are well taken care of. We do really well working together.” Bradley Music is a lifelong resident of Ware County and graduated from Ware County High School in 1996 and from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in 1999. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer and insurance agent. He has two sons, Carter (2006) and Cayden (2011). Brock Music is a lifelong resident of Ware County and graduated from Ware County High School in 1999. In 2001, the youngest Music graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer and insurance agent as well. He also graduated from Middle Georgia College in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management while obtaining his Commercial Pilots License and Certified Flight Instructor License. In 2012, Brock decided to move back to Waycross and return to the family business. He and his wife, the former Sarah Ellis, married in 2014. The couple has two daughters, Ellis Kate (born 2016) and Early Jane (born 2017). Rodney Music mentioned the community has been very supportive to the business over the last 30 years and for that he is very thankful. “I would like to thank the community for their support,” he said. “We are very grateful for this community. The support has been wonderful.” The elder Music says God is the reason he is at this point as a business owner. “We are grateful and blessed ... God has been good to us,” he said.
