Acey Winge

TAMPA — Acey Winge passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, peacefully at her home.

Her life was full of joy, thanks to her loving family, her active lifestyle, and her wonderful group of friends.

Mrs. Winge was born in Waycross where she was blessed to have the positive influence of a very special educator and local legend, Bessie Maynard. Her encouragement led Mrs. Winge to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Emory University and become a neurosurgical nurse in Atlanta.

Mrs. Winge’s love of learning continued throughout her life with various classes, including art appreciation at the University of South Florida, and History and French at the University of Tampa.

She met and married Jim Winge, from their hometown, who had returned home to attend the University of Georgia after serving in the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence during WWII

The Winges worked to build several successful businesses. They enjoyed 63 years together before Jim passed away in 2014.

At birth, she was named “Grace,” but it quickly evolved into “Acey,” which served her well as she became an avid tennis player. Mrs. Winge played in the Suncoast Tennis League and on other teams at Palma Cia Country Club.

Her love of tennis led her to attend Wimbledon and the U.S. Open several times. Mrs. Winge was drawn to the beautiful beaches of Florida.

She enjoyed birdwatching, swimming, water sports, and especially walking the shoreline “shelling’ to build her vast collection of beautiful treasured sea shells from Sanibel and Captiva.

The Winges moved to Davis Islands in 1977. They traveled extensively, but always returned to their home on Tampa Bay. Mrs. Winge served as a Tampa Museum of Art Docent, was a member of the Friends of the Arts, and a member of Palma Cia United Methodist Church.

She loved spending time with her friends playing bridge and meeting for book club. She truly did “ace” the meaning of living a happy and fulfilling life.

Mrs. Winge is survived by her children, Kathryn Winge Daniels (Ricks), Robin Winge and David Winge (Margaret); grandchildren Robyn Hermans (Jake), David Winge, Jr., and Emily Winge Morrison (Townsend); and great-grandchildren, Jack Hermans, Lauren Hermans, Mimi Morrison and Olivia Morrison; plus, her beloved pup, Stafford.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 10 at Palma Ceia United Methodist Church, 3723 W. Bay to Bay Boulevard, Tampa.

Memorial gifts may be made to The Tampa Museum of Art.

An online guest book is available at blountcurrymacdill.com.
