Virginia Cannon Highsmith

WAYCROSS — Mrs. Virginia Cannon Highsmith, 82, died Friday morning August 11, 2023 at Memorial Satilla Health.

She was born July 23, 1941 in Nassau County, Fla., to the late Jessie Linwood Cannon and Sarah Cobb Cannon.  Mrs. Highsmith graduated from Waycross High School, Ware Tech as a Licensed Practical Nurse, South Georgia College as a Registered Nurse, and from Georgia Southern University with a Master’s Degree in Education.  In 1979, she began teaching in the Ware County School System as a health occupations teacher. Mrs. Highsmith retired after 34 years of service.  

She was employed by Memorial Hospital in her early years, and she also retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections in the medical department. She was a member of Gilchrist Park United Methodist Church and former member of the Pilot Club.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Highsmith  also was preceded in death by her son, Jack Highsmith, Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Howard Jackson Highsmith, Sr. of Waycross; two daughters, Kathy O’Bright (Jimmy) and Terri Chancey; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Highsmith; grandchildren, Jessica Chancey, Brittany Chancey, Jodi Highsmith and Jesi Highsmith; great grandchildren, Grayson Grobsmith, Lily Kaye Grobsmith, Kallie Grobsmith and Thomas Kling.

A funeral service was held Monday morning, August 14, at the Music Funeral Home Chapel.  

Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.
