MIDWAY — Mr. Fred E. Smith, 94, died Monday night, May 29, 2023 at Magnolia Manor of Midway in Midway after an extended illness.
Smith was born October 23, 1928 in Waycross to the late Allen Ernest Smith and Susie Spivey Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Ware County retiring from CSX Railroad as a switchman after over 27 years of service.
In his early years Smith worked at his father’s cabinet shop and helped build houses.
He was a member of Sweat Memorial Baptist Church and loved fishing and building his own boats.
In addition to his parents, Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jeanette Griffin Smith; and his two sisters, Catherine Barber and Margaret Sullivan.
Survivors include one daughter, Carole Cribb (Mike) of Jacksonville; two sons, Allen E. Smith of Waycross and V. Avery Smith (Janalyn) of Covington, Ga.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Horace Barber; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Thursday, June 1 at Jordan Cemetery in Dixie Union.
