Marie Annette Ponsell Young

WAYCROSS — Mrs. Marie Annette Ponsell Young, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday night, May 28, 2023 at Memorial Satilla Health after an extended illness.

Mrs. Young was born December 6, 1939 in Waycross to the late Georgia Sen. William King Ponsell and Nora Ivy Chapman Ponsell.

She was a 1957 graduate of Wacona High School serving as class vice president. Mrs. Young graduated from the Women’s College of Milledgeville in 1961 with a bachelor’s in Education.

Her life was dedicated to serving her Lord and her community in numerous capacities. Mrs. Young was formerly employed as a 4th-grade teacher for the Waycross City School System, Food Service Director for Charlton County School System, Media Director for Lanier County High School, gifted teacher at Waresboro Elementary School, and eventually retired as media specialist for Memorial Drive Elementary School.

Mrs. Young was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Tau chapter, Psi State), and the National Society of Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century (St. Simons Chapter), the National Society of the Daughters on the American Colonists (Saint John’s Parish Chapter, Hinesville), and the Waycross-Ware County Retired Educators Association.

She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church Waycross where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class, formerly taught Sunday School, organized the Salvation Army Angel Tree event at Christmas, served on Builders’ for Christ Mission Team since 1982, and numerous other committees and positions.

Above all the things, Mrs. Young dedicated herself to her life. Her greatest joy was her three grandchildren, whom she made sure they had everything they ever needed. She took joy in celebrating people’s life events and successes by laminating newspaper articles and mailing the articles to them.

Mrs. Young will be deeply missed by her family, church family and community.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her siblings, Marion Ponsell, Mary Leigh Ponsell, W.K. Ponsell, Jr., J.T. Ponsell, Chester Ponsell, King F. Ponsell, and Melba P. Mayo.

Survivors include her husband of 62 ½ years, Richard Benjamin Young; one son, Richard Benjamin Young, Jr. (wife Billie Jo); three grandchildren, Ivy Lane Young, Sage Laurel Young and Benjamin Reed Young; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, (Saturday, June 3, 2023) at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. today at the church.

The Gleaners Sunday School Class is asked to meet at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at the church to serve as honorary pallbearers.
