City Wide Clean-Up

Staff Report

Residents in Waycross Commission District 1 will be the first designated participants in the citywide cleanup campaign that begins Monday, June 5.

From then through July 8 in District 5, the city is offering city residents and property owners the opportunity to place house-hold-related items in refuse containers at a designated location in each district. Collection containers will be available at the designated point in each district from early morning until sundown.

Residents don’t need to wait until their designated week to place items in a container. A container, regardless of its location, will be open to any resident during the hours of acceptance, City Manager Ulysses Rayford said last week in announcing the program.

Here’s the schedule by district:

• District 1: June 5-10, E.E. Moore Park, Tommy Kennedy Circle (container at end of cul-de-sac).

• District 2: June 12-17, Elizabeth Park, Howe Street (container in park).

• District 3: June 19-24, Garlington Park, 1501 George Street (container in park).

• District 4: June 26-July 1, Monroe Park, 1121 Hill Street (container behind tennis courts).

• District 5: July 3-8, Oakland Cemetery, 2410 Alice Street (container near water tower).

Some items are prohibited in the collection. Among those are tires, containers of paint, solvents, chemicals or pesticides, building materials, tree removal debris, bricks or blocks.

The city is soliciting help from youth and civic organizations as well as churches and other groups with the effort to aid the portion of the community unable to move and transport items from their property.

Groups interested in helping with the program may call Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Patrick Simmons at (912) 337-6062, Public Works Director James Smart at 281-5535 or Rayford at 670-5768. Those who would like help moving items in their home in preparation to be transported or for the transport of items also may call Simmons, Smart or Rayford.

Smart said the city’s regular collection schedule for yard waste and special pickup of household items will continue during the campaign. The latter requires a call to the public works department to schedule a time for the pickup.

There is no limit on the number of times a resident deposits items.
