WAYCROSS — Mrs. Cherie “Pie” Mobley McCarthy, 65, of Waycross died Thursday evening, June 29, 2023, after a sudden illness.
Mrs. McCarthy was born in Waycross to the late Shelton Lawrence “Skeet” Mobley and Frances Jeanette Cason Mobley.
Mrs. McCarthy was a graduate of the Ware County High School Class of 1975. On November 26, 1977, she married the love of her life, the late Kenny McCarthy, a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy.
Together they enjoyed many years of being avid UGA Bulldogs supporters. The McCarthys generously shared football tickets with countless friends and hosted fantastic tailgate parties before the annual Georgia-Florida games each year.
Mrs. McCarthy was a beautiful balance of sweet and tough, gifted to both extend grace and speak truth to others. Her friends can easily recall stories of her generosity while reminiscing about her grit and tenacity. Her Christ-like servant hood was apparent in her consistently and generously giving to others.
Mrs. McCarthy began her professional career at Waycross Ware Tech (now Coastal Pines Technical College) in 1977.
In March 2008, she retired as the Executive Administrative Assistant to the President at Okefenokee Technical College after serving in that position under four different presidents.
She was known for her efficiency and ability to quietly keep the college running as different presidents came and went. After her retirement, Mrs. McCarthy became a valued member of the Southeast Health District in October 2009. Though she was initially hired for a one-year term with temporary funding, Mrs. McCarthy remained for nearly 14 years in dedicated service to the benefit of staff and the community.
At the time of her death, she was a Support Services Worker for the District.
Mrs. McCarthy was an active and involved member of Deenwood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, worked in Vacation Bible School, and was active in the Royal Ambassadors Program.
Mrs. McCarthy loved her church and church family, often helping a young girl get a new dress or even babysitting for a young mom, but always showing kindness and assistance in her quiet humble way.
Mrs. McCarthy was fiercely loyal to and greatly loved family — both her immediate family and extended family. Her eyes sparkled with absolute joy when she talked about her grandchildren and her “first grandchildren.”
Mrs. McCarthy’s life was a testimony to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and as called, she sought to be His hands and feet in her daily walk. Whether at church, work, home or in the community, Mrs. McCarthy made a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ashley McCarthy.
She is survived by two sons, Will McCarthy and his wife, Kelli, of Jefferson, Ga., and Drew McCarthy and his wife, Laura, of Waycross; her “first grandchildren” Jeb Redick and Ty Redick, four grandchildren, Brooks David McCarthy, Ashley Eloise McCarthy, Nathan Willis McCarthy and Lyla Ivy McCarthy; one sister, Mia Redick and her husband, Jase, of Blackshear; three brothers, Cricket Mobley and his wife, Sharon, of Brunswick, Bruce Mobley and his wife, Beth, of Waycross and Keith Mobley of Waycross; her mother-in-law, Evelyn Sceals McCarthy of Waycross; three brothers-in-law, Gary McCarthy and his wife, Cindy, of Birmingham, Ala., Randy McCarthy and his wife, Gail, of Waycross, and Jeffrey McCarthy and his wife, Jennifer, of Waycross; nieces and nephews, Cason Mobley, Caleb Mobley, Shannon Connor, Dalton Redick, Nicole McCarthy, Natalie Seahorn, Josh McCarthy, Zack McCarthy, Nealie O’Neal, Laura McCarthy, Jacob McCarthy, and Matthew McCarthy; numerous great nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Monday, July 3 at Deenwood Baptist Church. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.
