A driver speeding from Pierce County into Ware County was arrested Sunday after the pursuing Georgia State Patrol trooper performed a PIT maneuver and forced the vehicle to stop on U.S. 1 at the Alma Highway.
Malachi Tyrone Jenkins, 44, was taken into custody and charged with numerous traffic violations including Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for a combination of drugs and alcohol, said Alicia Carter, GSP Waycross post secretary.
The driver was accompanied by two passengers, Mary Ellen Presley, 43, and a male juvenile, who were not charged.
Trooper Patrick Adam Orr, driving a marked GSP 2020 Dodge Charger, was pursuing the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Jenkins at a high rate of speed.
“He (Orr) had his lights and sirens on driving north on Georgia 4 (U.S. 1) in Ware County,” said Carter. “He performed a PIT maneuver by placing the right front of his patrol unit against the left rear of the Jenkins vehicle, which then rotated counterclockwise while the patrol unit came to rest on the roadway in the right northbound lane about 270 feet from the intersection with Al Lane.”
The stop occurred about 6:10 p.m. Sunday, said Carter.
Jenkins is additionally charged with Fleeing, Attempting to Elude Police, Reckless Driving, violations on a one-way roadway and rotary traffic island, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, Seatbelt Violation and violation of Georgia’s Open Container Law.
“Nobody, thankfully, was injured in the incident,” Carter said.
Jenkins was transported to the Ware County jail where he was booked and charged.
