Pay raise for Jurors, Grand Jurors and Bailiffs requested

Jurors, Grand Jurors and Bailiffs in Pierce County need a raise.

That request was made by Larry Walker at the Sept. 6 commission meeting.

Walker said he recently served on the Grand Jury and was surprised the pay for the  service was so low.

“The pay has not changed in 20 years,” he said. “I think it should be higher than that.”

He asked commissioners to consider raising the pay for all three judicial positions.

Pierce County currently pays jurors and Grand Jurors $30 per day for their service. Bailiffs receive $50 per day for their work. The current salary schedule was put in place about 18 years ago.

County chairman Neal Bennett asked Walker if the clerk’s office or the grand jury had called for the raises.

Walker said to his knowledge neither has, but he also said he was told the county commission would be the correct place to go to ask for raising the salaries.

A check of juror, Grand Juror and bailiff pay in neighboring counties shows Pierce County’s pay rates are similar or higher.

Bacon County pays $30, while Appling, Brantley, Wayne and Ware Counties all pay $25 per day for jurors and Grand Jurors. Brantley County pays forepersons of Grand Juries $30 per day.
