BRUNSWICK — A Brunswick man was found guilty of shooting and killing a Waycross man in Glynn County back in September 2021, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Ricky Morrow, 58, was sentenced to life in prison Friday, September 23, for the September 27, 2021 murder of Michael Allen “Redd” Propes, 23. He was charged with felony Murder, Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, announced District Attorney Keith Higgins.
The news release said when Morrow, Propes and one of Propes’ friends were hanging out at Morrow’s house on Blythe Island Drive. Morrow told Propes he wanted to do a shot of methamphetamine. According to the prosecutors, Propes bought the meth with $100 that Morrow gave to him.
All three were methamphetamine addicts.
Morrow gave Propes’ friend a syringe to prepare a shot of methamphetamine for himself. Morrow then became upset that there should be more methamphetamine than what Propes produced. Propes insisted that was it and he had not shortchanged Morrow.
Morrow then walked to another room and returned with a revolver. He again questioned Propes about the quantity of drugs, saying “don’t do me like this.”
Morrow shot Propes in the back one time, hitting him in the heart and lung, the release said. Propes died from his injuries before first responders arrived.
Glynn County Police responded to the shooting at approximately 11:39 p.m. Upon arrival, officers reportedly discovered a dead man. Police booked Morrow into the Glynn County Detention Center at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, jail records show.
According to prosecutors, Morrow told the responding officers and Propes’ friend that the shooting was an accident but never explained to officers how it was an accident. Morrow refused to make a statement to Glynn County Police Department investigators and declined to testify at the trial.
In his closing argument, Chief Assistant District Attorney Nigel Lush told the jury that this was another example of the tragedy of drug addiction and how guns and drugs don’t mix.
“Propes paid the ultimate price for his addiction, and Morrow needed to be held responsible for his,” stated Lush.
The jury deliberated for two hours before returning the guilty verdicts. Following the jury verdict on Sept. 21, Judge Roger B. Lane sentenced Morrow to life in prison with the possibility of parole plus an additional five years in prison for the gun charge.
In Georgia, life with the possibility of parole means a person must serve 30 years before becoming eligible for parole. As such, Morrow will be 87 years old when he becomes eligible.
