WCHS Softball - October 18th

STATESBORO — Surging Greenbrier extended its winning streak to 11 games beating Ware County 5-2 for the Region 1-AAAAA tournament championship Thursday at Mill Creek Park.

The Lady Gators (18-6), who entered as the No. 1 seed, beat fourth-seed Statesboro 5-2 in the losers’ bracket finals after the Lady Blue Devils knocked off seventh-ranked Coffee dropping the Lady Trojans to a fourth-seed for the state tournament.

Greenbrier (17-7-1), which entered the tournament as a third-seed, claimed the top spot to host one of eight double-elimination Super Regional brackets.

The Lady Gators travel to Region 4 champion Chamblee in DeKalb County. Ware County opens Thursday, October 20 against Region 2 third-seed Union Grove (12-10) at 11 a.m. Chamblee (20-3) faces Region 3 fourth-seed McIntosh (11-14) in the 9 a.m. opener.

The winners will meet at 1 p.m., with the losers playing at 3 p.m. The tourney will conclude Friday, October 21, with the championship game slated for noon and the “if” game starting at 2 p.m.

In other Region 1 vs. Region 2 matchups, Greenbrier will host fourth-seed Locust Grove. Region 4 runner-up Decatur and Region 3 third-seed Northgate are the other two teams in the bracket.

Statesboro will face runner-up Ola in the regional scheduled at Region 3 champion Harris County. Region 4 fourth-seed Tucker is also in the field.

Coffee goes to Region 2 champion Jones County. Region 3 runner-up Northside-Columbus and Region 4 third-seed Arabia Mountain are in the bracket.

The eight winners in the new Super Regional format will advance to the double-elimination state tournament in Columbus, which is scheduled to start Wednesday, September 26.
