Owen Vernon Carter

HOBOKEN — Owen Vernon Carter, 93, died Wednesday morning, September 28, 2022, at Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Hoboken. He served in the United States Army, serving in Panama during the Korean War. He was a barber with Willis Barbershop before he started his career with the railroad.

His railroad career began when he started working as a sheet metal worker with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He was then selected to be the local chairman of sheet metal workers in Waycross, and was elected to General Chairman of Railroad Workers for Sheet Metal Workers International Association, before finally becoming Directing General Chairman over the southeastern United States. He retired in 1989 after many years of service for his fellow union workers.

He joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church shortly after the church was organized and was an ordained Deacon. He also was a former Sunday school teacher in the Senior Adult Class.

He was the son of the late Owen Wiley Carter and Mary Magdalene Ammons Carter. He also was preceded in death by a brother, J.W. Carter; and three sisters, Myrtle Murray, Estelle Aycock and Annice Hardy.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Patricia Ann Henderson Carter of Hoboken; a daughter, Joan Carter (Adrian) of Hoboken; two sons, David Carter (Janett) and Mike Carter, both of Hoboken; four grandchildren, Brent Carter (Kandyce), Kimberly Cecil (Bryant), Jared Carter (Emily), Casey Parker (Zach); five great grandchildren, Elin Cecil, Ty Cecil, Mia Cecil, Audrey Carter and Stella Parker; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday, October 1) at Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will begin receiving friends at 10 a.m. at the cemetery.
