BLACKSHEAR — Mrs. Mattie Roselyn Durrance Lovell, age 78, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday morning, September 27, 2022, at her residence following a strong, determined, and courageous battle against an illness that never took away her humor or joy of life.
Mrs. Lovell passed exactly seven years to the day her first born son, Danny, went to be with the Lord.
Born January 17, 1944, in Alma, Mrs. Lovell was a daughter of the late Harley and Iris Taylor Durrance Courson. She lived most of her life in Bacon and Pierce counties and was a “jack of all trades.”
Mrs. Lovell had worked as a seamstress in a local sewing factory and in the mental health field in Ware County, but spent most of her life as a self-employed florist. She had owned the Dodge City Flower Shop, Flowers on Morningside, and retired as the owner of Johnson’s Florist.
She was a longtime member of Shady Grove Baptist Church where she attended the Senior Adult Sunday School class, had been a former Sunday School teacher, served on the Building Committee, Chairwoman of the WMU, and other church committees.
Mrs. Lovell also was a former member of the Waycross Kiwanis Club and the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce, and had been a volunteer with the Easter Seals.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lovell was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Earl Monroe Lovell; a son, Danny Earl Lovell; her brothers, David Durrance, Clyde Durrance, Lamar Durrance, Harold Durrance, Harry Courson, and Larry Courson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Iris Lee Carroll, and Lera and Bruce Hyers; and a sister-in-law, Glenda Curl Durrance.
Survivors include her daughter, Myrtice Lorraine “Lorrie” Lovell Davis (husband Harry) of Waycross; two sons, Andy Monroe Lovell (wife Amanda) and Randy Glen Lovell (wife Deanne), both of Patterson; grandchildren Mindy Eunice (husband Cecil), Early Taylor, Jessica Combee (husband Devlin), Kristian Aultman Hardy (husband Dez), Willie Aultman, Cayden Lovell, Andee Lovell and Sadee Lovell; great grandchildren, Mattie, Cole, Mavery and Mykah Eunice, and Madison Combee; two foster daughters, Jean and Mary; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Aaron “Cotton” and Glenda Durrance of Blackshear, Glynn and Carolyn Durrance of Wetumpka, Ala., Howard and Mickey Courson of Monticello, Fla., and Homer and Kathy Courson of Alma; two sisters, Ora Lee Hagan and Linda Palmer (Al), both of Blackshear; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Juanita Durrance of Roberta, Ga., Marie Durrance of Wetumpka, Ala., Judy Durrance of Waycross, Darlene Durrance of Lake Park, Ga., Pat Courson of Monticello, Fla., Yvonne Murphy of Blackshear, Ronnie Lovell of Blackshear and Mitchell Lovell (wife Gloria) of Sylvester; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Monday afternoon, October 3, 2022 at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Shady Grove Cemetery.
