NAHUNTA — An Ohio woman was quickly arrested Wednesday after she visited the Brantley County Sheriff’s Department and tried to use a handgun as collateral to bond her boyfriend out of jail.
Meredith Karen McGraw, age unavailable, 1980 E. 228th St., Euclid, Ohio, was booked into the jail February 1 on charges of Driving Without a License and DUI of multiple substances, according to Brantley Sheriff Len Davis.
“We need to talk to the District Attorney about what charges may be filed concerning the gun,” Davis said.
After the woman was told by jail officials she could not make the trade, she left the sheriff’s office. Davis said Deputy Wade Bennett caught up with McGraw at the Circle K in downtown Nahunta.
“She had the gun in her car and she was actually DUI,” Davis said. “I cannot remember the name or the caliber of the gun but it was a handgun.”
Asked how the gun was not detected by electronics, Davis said the lobby of the facility does not have an alert.
“There is no beeper in the lobby,” the sheriff said. “We don’t believe she had any ill intentions of using the gun nor to hurt anyone. She just wanted to get her boyfriend out of the jail. She’s not from around here.”
When the deputy checked the gun, the sheriff pointed out it was not loaded.
“She walked in and the sergeant made contact with her,” said Davis. “He asked her what she wanted. She showed him the gun and asked to use it as collateral. He told her we don’t do that and she left.”
McGraw remains in the Brantley County Jail with bond set at $3,142.
