Retired city clerk honored with key to City of Nahunta

NAHUNTA — Elouise Hulett broke into tears as she was honored with the key to the City of Nahunta in gratitude for her many years in service to the citizens of the small town.

Hulett worked for the city as the official clerk for more than 20 years, serving the people and providing assistance to the council and mayor whenever it was needed.

The bronze plaque presented by Mayor Barbara Maefield during the February 6 council meeting carried the message, “In recognition of your many years of dedicated service, devotion and commitment to the City of Nahunta.”

Mrs. Hulett was accompanied to the Nahunta City Council meeting by her daughters, Gina Hulett and Dale Hulett Hendrix.

“Thank y’all for recognizing my Mama,” said Gina. “She still loves this place.”

Said Mayor Maefield, “It’s good to have someone that’s 97 years old and still good to us and the city. We love Mrs. Elouise.”

Nahunta City Public Works Department employees Johnny Herrin and Ronald Dykes both worked there while Hulett was the clerk. They had great things to say about her.

“She was a pleasure to work with,” said Herrin. “She is an extremely smart woman and helped everybody. She was friendly and outgoing and helpful in that position and she is sorely missed by the city government. She worked hard and was a good representative of the city and its council and mayor.”

Dykes echoed Herrin's comments, adding she was “always at work and helped anyone, especially the city employees.”

Mrs. Hulett also worked with her husband, Sydney, in his businesses.

She enjoys collecting red bird trinkets and loves her dog, Diamond. Mrs. Hulett attends Nahunta United Methodist Church and is a part of the women’s group there.

Hulett was applauded by the council, mayor and those in attendance at the meeting.
