Margie Herndon Clifton

WAYCROSS — Mrs. Margie Herndon Clifton, 86, passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 22, 2023, at Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross.

Mrs. Clifton was born in Ware County in 1936 and resided all her life in Waycross.  She was a graduate of Waresboro High School where she loved to play basketball.  

Mrs. Clifton was a long-time member of the Waycross Woman’s Club, serving as District 8 President for many years, and was also a member of the Camellia Garden Club and the Red Hat Society.  

She loved serving her Lord and Savior as a member of First Baptist Church in Waycross. Mrs. Clifton was an avid supporter of her community, and enjoyed giving back as often as she could, including spreading joy with her friends in the Fun Time Band.

Mrs. Clifton loved to cheer for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, but most of all she loved her family dearly.  Her most cherished title was “Gran.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Edna Herndon, as well as her brothers, John, Jr., Jerome and Grady Herndon.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Harry A. Clifton, Sr.; her four children, Tommy (Lisa) Clifton of Blackshear, Harry “Bubba” Clifton, Jr. of Woodbine, Marty Clifton of Blackshear, and Christie (Gene) Nevil of Shellman Bluff; four grandchildren, Amanda (Skyler) Callender of Richmond Hill, Clint Clifton of Hortense, Grant (Stephanie) Jones of Waycross, and Hayley Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and eight beloved great grandchildren, Josh, Hudson, and Emmeline Callender of Richmond Hill, Crosby Clifton of Blackshear, K.K. and Easton Jones of Waycross, Kaden Roell of Blackshear, and Charley Mathews of St. Petersburg.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday, February 25) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.  

The family will begin receiving friends at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, a cause dear to her heart.
