WAYCROSS — Mrs. Marilyn Dixon Thornhill, 86, died Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Baptist Village Retirement Communities in Waycross following an extended illness.
Mrs. Thornhill was born Sunday, July 19, 1936 in Brantley County, and had lived most of her life in Ware County. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Hughie Dixon and Mattie Woodard Dixon.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thornhill was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Grady C. Thornhill. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Maudine “Shug” Dixon and Myra Fisher; and eight brothers, Eugene Dixon, Wendell G. Dixon, Stanton W. Dixon, Harry D. Dixon, Lamar Dixon, Robert Dixon, Dr. Jimmy Dixon, and Harold H. Dixon.
She received her early education from the former Woodard-Godwin School and was a graduate of Wacona High School. She retired as bookkeeper with Bailey Monument Co. after many years of service and later was employed with BB&T Bank.
Mrs. Thornhill was a longtime member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, had formerly served as the church pianist, had served as the music director for 30 years, a member of the Adult Coed No. 4 Sunday School Class, and member of the Adult Choir. She was the founder and leader of the Sewing Sisters Ministry of the church.
Mrs. Thornhill is survived by her daughter, Cindy Thornhill Taylor (husband John) of Waycross; a son, Lindsey Thornhill of Milton, Ga; four grandchildren, Brittany Taylor (late Jamar) of Lakeland, Fla., Bryce Miller of Lincoln, Neb., Chandler Thornhill of Atlanta, and Graham Thornhill of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three great-grandchildren, Jaylon, Janaya and Jaxon Taylor all of Lakeland Fla; three sisters-in-law, Hilda Dixon, Martha Dixon and Arlene Dixon; as well as a host of nieces,nephews, cousins and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be sent to Baptist Village Retirement Communities, 2650 Carswell Avenue, Waycross, 31503.
A funeral service will be held today (Saturday, October 29) at 11 a.m., in the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. today at Music Funeral Home.
