James Calvin Morgan

WHITE OAK — James Calvin Morgan, 95 of White Oak, passed away Friday, October 21, 2022 at Bayview Nursing Home in his hometown of Nahunta.

Morgan was born July 19, 1927 on the farm in the Raybon Community of Brantley County. He was the fifth of six children to Bill and Rachel Morgan. The family lost the farm during the depression and then sharecropped for a number of years until his mother’s death in December 1939.

The 1940 census shows the family living on Floria Street in Nahunta. The family moved to Brunswick in 1944 jointly buying a house on M Street.

After graduation, Morgan worked in the shipyards building Liberty Ships until he was drafted in July 1945. He served 18 months in the U.S. Army with the Allied occupation forces in Austria and Germany.

Morgan married Mary Jo Crawford in 1951 and remained married until her passing in April 2020. He served for 15 years on the Brunswick City Council, was active in the Ballard Recreation Association for many years and retired after a 43-year career with Hercules to White Oak, where he enjoyed fishing and active outdoor living.

Morgan is survived by his children, Robbie Morgan (Sherrie) and Keith Morgan (Barbara); grandchildren, Baxter Morgan (Frances), Parker Morgan (Allyson), Dawn Stephans (Chris) and Jamie Hall; great-grandchildren James, Isabel, Anderson, Wesley, William, Eliza and Laurel Morgan, and Lennon and Reese Stephans; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Monday, October 31, 2022 at Palmetto Cemetery with a celebration of life for the Morgans to be held at a later date.
