Virginia Sweat Lewis, 93, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday evening, April 23, 2024, at Baptist Village Nursing Home in Waycross.
Born in Blackshear April 12, 1931, she grew up in Pierce County in the area known as “the Forks of the Hurricane”. After attending Blackshear High School, she married Vernon Lewis Jr. who had just returned home from serving in World War II. Together they had two children and moved to Jesup where they made their home for many years. While in Jesup, she worked in the bookkeeping department at American National Bank for 20 years. After retirement, she dedicated her time to being a housewife. Her favorite hobbies were gardening and cooking. Friends and family always praised her food, especially her cakes. The fact that she took so much pride in her cooking may be the reason people enjoyed whatever she made. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church during her youth and would return to Beulah Baptist when she moved back to Pierce County 20 years ago.
She was a daughter of the late Archie Rudolph and Betty Lee Sweat. In addition to her late husband, Offie Vernon Lewis Jr., she was also preceded in death by her son, Bobby Joe Lewis and two sisters, Evelyn Smith and Iris Jean Mixon.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Rozier (husband, Harold), Blackshear; a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Lewis, Pearson; her granddaughter, Virginia Tison (husband Trey); a great-granddaughter, Claire Tison; two sisters, Carolyn Huggins, Alma (Pierce County) and Sandra Kay Crews (husband, Lawton), Waycross; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 4-4:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the graveside at Beulah Cemetery.
