Alexander Albert “Alex” Washington, 84, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, formerly of Patterson, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 20, 2024, at Treasure Cove Hospice in Fort Pierce, FL.
Born in Patterson May 1, 1939, he lived in Pierce County most of his life before moving to Port St. Lucie three years ago. He was a graduate of Lee Street High school in Blackshear and following his high school graduation, he went to work for Harry’s Gin Company in Patterson. He would go on to retire from Georgia Natural Gas, which gave him more time to do what he truly loved, farming. He also enjoyed carpentry work and was considered a true handyman. Fishing, reading his Bible and listening to music as well as singing were also things he enjoyed. He always had a smile on his face and even through sickness, never complained. He was a member of Calvary Compassion Church in Ft. Pierce but had also been a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Patterson.
He was a son of the late Clarence and Isabell Monroe Washington. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Fedrick Washington; three sisters, Pauline, Clara, and Naomi; two brothers, Paul and Matthew and by a sister-in-law, Betty Washington.
Survivors include his two daughters and son-in-law, Alexandra and Theodore Sanders, Port St. Lucie and Leslea and Pentry McAfee, Jacksonville, FL; two sons, Burnell Jinks, Patterson and Frederick Washington, Tampa, FL; three sisters, Queen (Herbert) Joseph, Boynton Beach, FL, Isabell (Earl) Smith, Patterson, and Annie Mae Smiley, Waycross; a brother, Daniel Washington, Offerman; his aunt, Naomi Whitehead, Farrell, PA; eight grandchildren, Tiffany Wood, Ja’Courtney Cunningham, Gerald Cunningham, Theodore Wood, Ethan Sanders, Dystany Cunningham, Nick Mathis and Dianna Sanders; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 25, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, from the First Baptist Church in Blackshear with Pastor Thoedore Sanders and Pastor Marcus Nix officiating.
Interment will be in the Gethsemane Cemetery near Patterson.
