Silas Larry Culver

Silas Larry Culver,  72, of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday night, February 28, 2024, at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL, following an extended illness.

Born May 8, 1951, in Greenfield, Tennessee, he was a son of the late W.J. and Emma O’Steen Culver. Living most of his life in Pierce County, he graduated from Blackshear High School in 1971.

He had worked as a homebuilder for Hannah Builders in Waycross and as a self-employed contractor for several years before becoming a farmer in 1977 as the owner/operator of Culver Farms, growing tobacco, corn, cotton, and peanuts. He was awarded the Pierce County Chamber of Commerce Farmer of the Year in 2003.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed deer hunting, dove hunting, shooting squirrels, saltwater and freshwater fishing and listening to hound dogs chase deer and rabbits through the woods and clearcuts. Through the years, he had been a member of the Pierce County Hunting Club, Skeeter Swamp Hunting Club, Cathole Hunting Club, and Johns Pond Hunting Club. He was also a member of the Pierce County Foxhunter’s Association, having recently been awarded the 2024 Sportsman of the Year.

He also enjoyed woodworking with his friend, Jimmy Clark, planting a garden every year and tending to it, and was a major fan of the Tennessee Volunteers. He could frequently be found riding his Polaris Ranger to town to the feed store or on the dirt roads near his home and was one of the Smith Road area guards or possibly even the neighborhood sheriff or mayor.

He thoroughly loved his friends and family, enjoying spending time and riding his grandchildren around the farm, and was known and will be remembered for his sense of humor, often telling jokes or making comments to get a laugh out of someone. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Culver and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Beth and Hulan Blackshear.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Terrie Smith Culver, Blackshear; two children, Candace Douglas (husband Josh) and Zach Culver (wife Sarah), all of Blackshear; three grandchildren and another expected soon, Peyton Douglas, Fisher Douglas, Stella Grace Culver and Silas Culver due to be born in September; brother and sister-in-law, Cleve and Pam Culver, Blackshear; three nephews, Mike Blackshear (wife Lori), Kris Culver (wife Kaitlyn) and Roby Culver (wife Courtney) and several great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, from the chapel of Hart Funeral Home.

Interment will follow in the Alabaha Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.
