Edgar Rogers ‘Ed’ Brantley Sr.

Born in Jacksonville, FL on July 10, 1938, he grew up in Blackshear where his family moved so that his father could work in the Brantley Company. He was a 1956 graduate of Blackshear High School and enlisted soon afterward in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. Following his military service, he returned home to enroll in the University of Georgia, graduating in 1966 with a degree in risk management.  While at UGA, he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. His career path eventually led him to Savannah, where he worked for almost 30 years at Savannah Sugar, home of Dixie Crystals, retiring as a regional sales manager.  His outgoing personality and ability to never meet a stranger served him well in his career. An avid golfer, he built many business relationships on a golf course. Following retirement, his love for the game of golf took him and his wife Sylvia to Scotland to play on historic courses, such as St. Andrews, Royal Troon and Carnoustie. He also played a few times at Augusta National, home of the Masters Tournament. Throughout his life, he won numerous club championships at every course where he was a member. He was also a huge Georgia Bulldog fan and loved to listen to Larry Munson on Saturdays in the fall. He attended Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church.

He was a son of the late George Daniel Brantley Sr. and Mary Rogers Brantley Mattson.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Hamlett Brantley; a stepson-in-law, Mac King; a sister, Mary Linn Kimbrell; a brother, George Brantley Jr. and a nephew, Winston Bowen Jr.

Survivors include his daughter, Anne (Kim) Brantley, Redding, CA; his son, Edgar Rogers “Ed” Brantley Jr., Oneonta, NY; a step-daughter, Cyndee King, Loganville; a step-son, Tim (Lynn) Chambers, Ringgold; two sisters, Betty Brantley and Jane (Sonny) Bowen, all of Blackshear; a brother, Duncan (Nancy) Brantley,  McDonough; a sister-in-law, Helen Brantley, Jacksonville, FL; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
