Mary Margaret Peterson Tuten

Mary Margaret Peterson Tuten, 84, of Blackshear, passed away early Tuesday morning at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House in Waycross, following an extended illness.

Born February 14, 1940 in Douglas, she was a daughter of the late Rexford Peterson and Annie Berniece Baker Peterson Wall.  She graduated from Coffee County High School and South Georgia State College. She lived a few years in Waycross before moving to Pierce County in 1975. She was retired from the Pierce County Board of Education as a paraprofessional, having worked many years at Grady Street School and Blackshear Elementary School.

A longtime member of First Baptist Church in Blackshear, she attended the Enriched Sunday School Class, was a former teacher of a children’s Sunday school class, was active with the WMU, Mission Mosaic, GAs and the JOY Group. She also had participated in several mission trips to New York, South Africa and Ecuador.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Benny Peterson and a brother-in-law, Andy Day.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, James Stephen “Jimmy” Tuten Jr., Blackshear; two children, Jenifer Tuten Raulerson (husband Lanier), Douglas and Stephen Tuten (wife Paula), Blackshear; five grandchildren, Rebecca Boatright (husband Jeremy), Yulee, FL, Daniel Lanier Raulerson (wife Kathryn), Douglas, Matthew Tuten (wife Brittini),  Blackshear, Madison Tuten, Augusta and Mason Tuten, Nashville, TN; five great -grandchildren, Joseph Campese, Brock Boatright, Cooper Boatright, Raleigh Tuten and Hayes Tuten; twosisters, Patsy Wall Day, Ambrose and Joan Wall, Douglas; a sister-in-law, Eulene Peterson and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be from 1:30-3 p.m. Thurday, July 25, at First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 25, from the First Baptist Church in Blackshear.

A private interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery.

The First Baptist Church Enriched Sunday School class is asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. They are asked to please be at the church by 2:40 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, GA 31501 or the First Baptist Church in Blackshear, Mission Fund, 670 Main Street, Blackshear, GA 31516.
