Out of county tuition to increase for the 2023-2024 school year

Out-of-county tuition for students attending Pierce County Schools will increase by $51 for the 2023-2024school year.

Tuition for non-resident students will increase to $1,676 in the coming year, up from the $1,625 charged for the 2022-2023 term.

The school board approved setting the non-resident tuition fees during their regular monthly meeting Monday night.

Finance Director Melanie Helms says the figure is based on the number of students enrolled and the amount of local revenues expended for education. The number fluctuates from year to year.

The tuition fee is derived by dividing the amount of local taxes used to fund the system each year by the total number of students in Pierce County schools, less an adjustment for state funding. Pierce County’s taxpayers contribute about $8.3 million to the Quality Basic Education (QBE) Act funding formula adjustment is $2.4 million and the student enrollment is 3,637

The tuition fees are used to offset costs. Non-local students must apply each year and are accepted on a space-available basis provided they have no behavioral or discipline problems. A total of 29 non-resident tuition students are currently enrolled here.

The deadline for tuition students is July 1 for first semester and December 1 for second semester.
