John Raymond Young Sr., 84, of Turner, MI, formerly of Hilliard, FL, passed away Monday morning, February 20, 2023, at his residence.
Born December 8, 1938 in Essexville, MI, he was a son of the late John Robert and Nina Hutchison Young. He had lived many years in Jacksonville before moving to Hilliard in 1999. After the passing of his wife in 2020, he moved to Turner, MI.
He retired from the United States Navy and Maxwell House Coffee and was a volunteer fireman for many years. He had enjoyed coaching tee ball, loved gardening and tending to his house plants and was a huge “shopaholic”. He was also an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan, loved his grandkids and great-grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa” and “Old Papa”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Quincy Charlotte Young; four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his daughter, Jeanette Watt (husband Tom), Jacksonville, FL; son, J.R. Young (wife Maureen), St. Augustine, FL; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and several other relatives in Florida and Michigan.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 3, from the Buford Grove Baptist Church in Hilliard, Florida.
He will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at 3 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the Waters Cemetery with military honors.
