PCHS Bear Facts

This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning February 22-March 1, 2023. It’s back to school today (Wednesday) for a short week of instruction. The Georgia Ag Experience, a STEM-based mobile classroom, is at the Pierce County Board of Education today through Friday.

Congratulations to PCHS wrestler Jaden Lyons, who won the class AA state title in the 215-pound division at the traditional championships last weekend in Macon. Jaden is the third individual in PCHS history to win a state wrestling title. Meanwhile, Forrest Whitley wrestled to a 5th place finish in the 126-lb division while Danny Thigpen was 5th in the 144-lb division. Congrats to our wrestlers and to Coach Brad Thomas and Coach John Hilton.

Hats off to PCHS boys tennis for their 4-1 region victory over Tattnall County on February 16. Jeb Bradley won at #1 singles (6-1, 6-0); J.C. Nimmer won at #2 singles (6-1, 6-2); and Aaden Carlson won at #3 singles (6-4,6-0); Davis Hersey and Peyton Thompson fell in #1 singles (3-6, 6-1, 3-6); Grayson Rodgers and Garrett Page won at #2 singles (6-1, 6-2).

We salute the following students for auditioning and being accepted into the GMEA District 8 honor band! Aubrey Johnson, Cadee Raulerson, Jamie Strickland, Kamberly Scott, Maria Sotello, Wyatt Mauffray, Zach Smith, Broden Colbert, Riley Vaverchak, Julian Castillo, and Caden Edwards. Way to go, band!

FFA is taking orders for strawberries at PCHS now through February 24. Flats of these delicious strawberries will be $21 and can be picked up at the Ag room at PCHS Thursday, March 2. See Mr. Prescott, Mr. Ratliff, or an FFA member to order.

Candidates for the 2023 Sound of Silver Auxiliary units, mark your calendars: Danceline and Majorette practice will be Monday, Feb. 27 through Thursday, Mar. 2nd from 3:45 until 5:30 each day. Tryout day will be Friday, March 3 in front of judges. Colorguard and flagline practice will be Friday, March 10 and again from Tuesday, March. 14 through Thursday, March 16 from 3:45 until 5:30 each of those days. Tryout day will be Friday, March 17 in front of judges. You are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, but all attire must be in accordance with the dress code. Permitted attire includes: T-Shirts, shorts, leggings, tennis shoes, and dance shoes. Not allowed are short shorts, midriff tops/no stomachs showing, low cut tops, sandals, slippers, or shower shoes.

The PCHS Theatre Department will present 12 Angry Jurors on Tuesday, March 7 at 7 pm in the PCHS auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. Then on March 14, it’s a theater showcase that will include Charlotte’s Web and Hamilton Highlights. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission for that event will also be $5 at the door.

The Miss Pierce County High School pageant will accept registrations through Friday, March 10. Any girls interested in participating can pick up a registration form from Mrs. Beverly’s room (395) in the mornings before 8:15 or during 4th block. The pageant will be held on Saturday, March 25.

The 2023 Spring Klondike Career Day at Georgia Power’s Savannah Operating Headquarters will be held Friday, March 10. This is a career exposure event for high school students. Activities include a live wire demonstration, bucket truck exhibitions, network underground, metering, transmission and climbing.

FFA is joining with 4H to host the 2023 Poultry Show in the Park on Monday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Blackshear City Park. Competition is open to ages 5 through 18. Events include a rooster crowing contest, fashion show, record book contest, and breed class contest. Entry fee is $30, but you can register up to 4 birds at just $10 per additional bird. Exhibitors and at least one parent must attend a parent meeting on March 6 @ 5:30 p.m. at the Pierce County Extension  office.

Prom is getting ever so closer! Juniors and seniors and their guests are invited to “Dance through the Decades” on Saturday, April 22, but your class dues must be paid before we leave for spring break on March 31 in order to attend prom. Dues are as follows: freshmen ($5), sophomores ($10), juniors ($25), and seniors ($20).  Prom guests must be at least in 9th grade and no older than 20. Any guest must be pre-approved by the PCHS administration. To get a guest pre-approved, you must fill out the blue guest registration form that is located outside of Mrs. Slusher’s classroom (399). The registration form, a copy of the guest’s picture ID, and a guest fee must be turned in to Mrs. Slusher before March 31.

Meanwhile, the PCHS Prom Committee is now selling Hog -n- Bones boston butt tickets.  For $30 each. This is an $8 savings from the normal counter price at the restaurant. Tickets are on sale through March 8 and you can redeem your tickets any time between now and May 13 at the Waycross Hog-n-Bones. See Mrs. Slusher or a Prom Committee member to purchase tickets.

Friday, Feb. 24: Vidalia @ PCHS soccer (5 & 7 p.m.); PCHS track at Southeast Bulloch (4 p.m.); PCHS baseball at Southeast Bulloch (6 p.m.)

Saturday, Feb. 25; PCHS baseball vs. Fannin County (4 p.m. at Brunswick)
