UPDATE: Cason withdraws name from PC Manager

UPDATE: Pierce County Commissioners and County Manager Candidate Joey Cason have been unable to agree on a contract and the county has rescinded its finalist designation.

Interim County Manager Chuck Scragg made the announcement early Thursday afternoon, Feb. 16. The commission will now pursue other candidates to fill the vacancy.

A full report will be included in next week’s edition of The Times.

Original story:Joey M. Cason is the sole finalist for county manager.

Cason was unanimously named as the lone finalist at a called meeting of the county commission Monday morning.

The board met in closed session conducting interviews before returning to open session to make the decision.

Cason currently resides in Brunswick where he runs his own company, Parable Financial Network, which specializes in individual and business financial planning.

He has previously served as county manager in White County in the northeast Georgia Mountains and was also formerly the executive director of the Camden County  Public Service Authority.

Cason holds a master’s degree in public administration from Georgia Southern University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Valdosta State University.

Commissioners approved calling for Monday’s called meeting at their regular meeting last Tuesday night Feb. 7.

A total of nine candidates applied for the position. Commissioners, by law, could have named up to three finalists for the position, but all agreed Cason was their top pick.

Now that Cason has been named as the finalist, the county must wait 14 days before making the hire official. The 14 day waiting period is required by Georgia Law.

Cason can officially be hired as the new manager Feb. 27 under that time line.

The new manager will work along side interim manager Chuck Scragg for a couple of weeks to learn the position, before taking over the job permanently.

The new manager will replace former County Manager Jason Rubenbauer who resigned in November, 2022. Rubenbauer left to take a job as director of the Waycross-Ware County Development Authority.
