PCHS Bear Facts

This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning February 15-21, 2023.

Winter Break is upon us! Remember: no classes From Friday, February 17 through Tuesday, February 21.

Good luck to Kelly Brewster and Justin Herrin, who are participating in the All State Chorus tomorrow (Thursday) through Sunday in Athens.

Attention artists! This spring there are multiple opportunities for you to show off your talent in our area. Various art shows will be kicking off within the next few weeks, and we are looking for artists to submit their best artwork. If you are interested, bring your artwork, with your name and grade attached, to Mr. Jerry Murray in the art room tomorrow (Thursday).

Several of our school clubs have been in the midst of celebrating their national awareness weeks. Last week was FBLA week. FBLA recently completed a round of state competitions. Next up is the FBLA State Leadership Conference, set for March 10-12. The FBLA advisor at PCHS is Mrs. Lauren Whitaker.

Congratulations to Rodrigo Alcaraz and Ram Patel for receiving their Microsoft Office Specialist certification in Word 2019!

FCCLA activities included wearing red (Monday), a finger foods luncheon (Tuesday), a tour of Georgia Southern University (today), and officers bringing treats (Thursday).  Our FCCLA advisors are Mrs. Kelly Jacobs and Mrs. Amy Day.

This week is National FFA Week and National FCCLA Week. For FFA, activities included dress up days.  Monday was “America Day” with Tuesday being “Camo Day”. Today features “Farmers vs. Cowboys” while tomorrow is “FFA Spirit Day”.  Our FFA advisors are Mr. Seth Prescott and Mr. John Ratliff.

Congratulations to the FFA Floriculture team, which placed 4th in state competition this past week in Perry. Team members included Cianna Kicklighter, Maddie White, Reagan Cauthen, and Landon Rainey.

Meanwhile, FFA is joining with 4H to host the 2023 Poultry Show in the Park! It’s going down on Monday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Blackshear City Park. Competition is open to ages 5 through 18. Events include a rooster crowing contest, fashion show, record book contest, and breed class contest. Entry fee is $30, but you can register up to 4 birds at just $10 per additional bird. Exhibitors and at least one parent must attend a parent meeting on March 6 @ 5:30 p.m. at the Pierce County Extension  office.

FFA is also taking orders for strawberries at PCHS now through February 24. Flats of these delicious strawberries will be $21 and can be picked up at the Ag room at PCHS Thursday, March 2.

Candidates for the 2023 Sound of Silver Auxiliary units, mark your calendars: Danceline and Majorette practice will be Monday, Feb. 27 through Thursday, Mar. 2nd from 3:45 until 5:30 each day. Tryout day will be Friday, March 3 in front of judges. Colorguard and flagline practice will be Friday, March 10 and again from Tuesday, March. 14 through Thursday, March 16 from 3:45 until 5:30 each of those days. Tryout day will be Friday, March 17 in front of judges. You are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, but all attire must be in accordance with the dress code. Permitted attire includes : T-Shirts, shorts, leggings, tennis shoes, and dance shoes. Not allowed are short shorts, midriff tops/no stomachs showing, low cut tops, sandals, slippers, or shower shoes.

Belated congratulations to the Students of the Month for January and February, seniors Addy Cantrell and Kenzie Meeks! Addy and Kenzie join a list for the 2022-23 school year that also includes Henry Peagler (September), Ellie Mattox (October), Lane Doss (November), and Lillie Stipe (December).  Special thanks to the Blackshear Exchange Club for sponsoring these recognitions.

The PCHS Theatre Department will present 12 Angry Jurors on Tuesday, March 7 at 7 pm in the PCHS auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. Then on March 14, it’s a theater showcase that will include Charlotte’s Web and Hamilton Highlights. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission for that event will also be $5 at the door.

Here is a field trip that should be worth the ride: On Friday, March 10 from 10 until 1, it’s the 2023 Spring Klondike Career Day at Georgia Power’s Savannah Operating Headquarters. This is a career exposure event for high school students. Activities include a live wire demonstration, bucket truck exhibitions, network underground, metering, transmission and climbing.

The Miss Pierce County High School pageant will be Saturday, March 25. Girls interested in participating can pick up a registration form from Mrs. Beverly’s room (395) in the mornings before 8:15 or during 4th block. The registration deadline is Friday, March 10.

Juniors and seniors and their guests are invited to “Dance through the Decades” on Saturday, April 22. Your class dues must be paid before we leave for spring break on March 31 in order to attend prom. Dues are as follows: freshmen ($5), sophomores ($10), juniors ($25), and seniors ($20).  Prom guests must be at least in 9th grade and no older than 20. Any guest must be pre-approved by the PCHS administration. To get a guest pre-approved, you must fill out the blue guest registration form that is located outside of Mrs. Slusher’s classroom (399). The registration form, a copy of the guest’s picture ID, and a guest fee must be turned in to Mrs. Slusher before March 31.

Congratulations to Henry Peagler, who has committed to play football next season at the University of Georgia!

Congrats to all Bear Wrestlers that qualified for the state traditional wrestling tournament, this Thursday through Saturday in Macon: Shawn Szabo (120 lbs), Forrest Whitley (126 lbs), Zach Davis (138 lbs), Danny Thigpen (144 lbs), and Jaden Lyons (215 lbs).

PCHS Lady Bears tennis blanked Savannah Arts in varsity action February 9 in Savannah.

Grace Christopher blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0 in #1 singles. Rebecca Tyre won in three sets (6-2, 5-7,10-4) at #2 singles while Marli Walker scored victory at #3 singles (6-0, 6-1). The tandem of Taylor Sikes & Maura Kate Waters won in #1 doubles action (6-2, 6-3) while the duo of Mattie Lee and Jasmine Sergent won in #2 doubles competition (6-2, 6-3).

Meanwhile, the PCHS boys took four out of five points in their win. Jeb Bradley fell at #1 singles (4-6,3-6). J.C. Nimmer won at #2 singles (6-2, 7-5), and Aeden Carlson won at #3 singles 6-0, 6-2). The combo of Davis Hersey and Peyton Thompson won in straight sets at #1 doubles (6-2, 6-0) competition while Grayson Rogers and Garrett Paige earned a forfeit in #2 doubles.

Tennis is back in action on Thursday, February 16 traveling to Tattnall County.
