Pierce County seeking new county manager

Pierce County’s new manager could be hired by the end of March.

Commissioners approved a time line for the search and hiring of the new county manager at their regular meeting last Tuesday night.

The county is currently accepting applications for the post and a public notice has been published in The Times along with several county government and social media sites.Deadline for applications will be Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Commissioners discussed, but took no action on, appointing a search committee which will include two commissioners, Interim Manager Chuck Scragg and county clerk Chuck Yeargin.

The committee will review candidates and make selections for those to be interviewed for the job.

Interviews will be conducted by the committee and two-three top candidates will be selected.

Plans call for finalists to be selected and presented to the full commission for a vote. The timeline calls for those selections to be made and announced by the middle of February.

Under state law, governments must wait 14 days after naming finalists for a position before they can make a final decision on the hire and appoint a new manager.

Plans call for the new manager to be hired at the Commission’s regular monthly board meeting March 6.

The new manager will work along side interim manager Scragg for a couple of weeks to learn the position, before taking over the job permanently.

The new manager will replace former County Manager Jason Rubenbauer who resigned in November, 2022. Rubenbauer left to take a job as director of the Waycross-Ware County Development Authority.
